High water pressure can be a good thing when you wash your car or take a shower. However, the excess pressure does not do your plumbing system any favors.
In fact, most plumbing fixtures can only handle a water pressure of about 80 PSI. If this limit is exceeded, you can usually expect several issues with your system, not to mention high repair costs. To better protect your plumbing system, watch out for these signs of high water pressure.
1. Leaking Pipes and Faucets
As mentioned earlier, plumbing fixtures such as pipes and faucets have pressure limits. When the pressure is too high, you are likely to notice more loose joints in your pipes. Faucets may also develop leaks from the gradual deterioration of rubber seals at the connection base.
Strong water pressure may also force its way through the fittings and result in tiny pinhole leaks. Unfortunately, some leaks may be hidden and hard to notice. Such leaks could silently wreak havoc on your home's structure. The ones you can see may resemble a tiny break of spraying water near the joints and fixtures in your home.
Although replacing leaking pipes and fixtures may seem to solve the issue, the fix is only temporary. If you have to change faulty pipes and faucets frequently, high water pressure might be to blame.
2. Strange Noises in the Pipes or Appliances
A banging or clanking noise in your pipes, especially after you flush your toilet or use a faucet, could indicate higher than usual water pressure. Your pipes have to adapt to the high pressure, and in doing so, they produce strange (and sometimes annoying) noises. Unfortunately, the sounds could also be a warning sign of imminent leaks in the future.
However, strange noises are not just limited to your pipes. Your home appliances, such as your dishwasher and washing machine, could also produce unusual noises when in use.
Typically, your dishwasher might produce a humming sound when you run it. But you may need to pay more attention if you hear rattling and howling sounds with every cycle. These noises may be from the mechanical parts of the appliance counteracting the intense water pressure. The gradual strain on any of your appliances can quickly shorten their lifespan.
Do not ignore shuddering and banging noises once you hear them. You could ruin your appliances or plumbing fixtures sooner than you think.
3. Higher Water Bills
Sometimes, high water pressure may damage your pipes and other plumbing components. Usually, the damage results in unexpected leaks that can quickly add up. Unfortunately, you will still have to pay for the wasted water, which could explain the higher monthly water bills.
But even without leaks, high water pressure can still result in high utility bills. You simply use up more water every time you turn on your faucet or run a household appliance. The water flow rate of a faucet increases with increasing water pressure.
If the water pressure grows even higher, you are likely to use up even more water. The increased consumption will reflect in your monthly water bill. You will have to pay more without even realizing it.
